Workshop Objectives

___________________________________________________________________
It is proposed to plan, organize, and host a workshop to develop a “vision” document that expresses the research community’s sentiment regarding Antarctic Integrated and System Science.  This document will seek to provide the National Science Foundation the scientific guidance and with justification to request continued and increased national investment in research and exploration in this domain. A detailed description of the scientific potential of AISS science will be developed and research areas poised to deliver significant scientific return on NSF investments in an integrated systems approach over the next decade or more. The workshop objectives are to:

  • identify important and compelling Antarctic science questions that are best addressed in an integrated and/or systems approach building on the momentum of the IPY and other on-going programs and projects,
  • develop a rationale for setting priorities and assessing which topics are scientifically mature enough to be addressed in a timely manner both intellectually and technologically,
  • guide the further development of an Antarctic Integrated and System Science program in the years to come, and
  • provide the NSF with a basis for requesting that additional national resources be allocated to these scientific endeavors.
